What's new: This historic inn, which dates to the '30s, is to reopen April 26, 2007 after a $15-million overhaul. Formerly the Palms at Palm Springs spa hotel, it has been closed since 2004. The décor, by L.A. designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, is eclectic and nostalgic, with French tiles, Uzbekistani textiles and vintage photos. Also new: flat-panel TVs and wireless Web access in the 56 guest rooms, a small spa, poolside restaurant.

Colony Palms Hotel, 572 N. Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262; (800) 557-2187, www.colonypalmshotel.com. Rates from $169 a night midweek, $239 on the weekend.
