This restaurant is in an enchanting northern Thai compound on the banks of the Ping River, about a 20-minute drive north of town. It was designed by Ajarn Chulathat Kitibutr, a Lanna-style preservationist and architect also responsible for the nearby Four Seasons Resort. Thai cuisine, $15 to $20 per person, dinner only.
Heuan Phen, 112 Rachamankha, Chiang Mai, Thailand, 011-66-53-277-103. Serves northern Thai dinners, featuring such delicacies as chili dip and egg noodle soup, in a fine old northern Thai town house; lunch is available in the chaotic street-front dining room. Entrees $5 to $10.
Sate, on Inthawarorot Road near the Chiang Mai City Arts & Culture Center, Chiang Mai, Thailand. A peanut barbecue spot; main dishes $2 to $3.
Bo A Cho, an open-air place in the Anusarn Market, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Serves seafood delicacies such as prawns in corn sauce and curried crab in the shell; meals about $10.
Antique House, Charoen Prathet Road near the Iron Bridge, Chiang Mai, Thailand; 011-66-53-276-810, sells antiques and serves a range of Asian cuisine in an 1870 house that's now a National Heritage Site.
The Gallery, 25-29 Charoenrat Road, Wat Ket district, Chiang Mai, Thailand; 011-66-53-248-601, is a riverside craft shop and eatery.
