Avis to offer Wi-Fi service in its rentals

Travelers renting cars from Avis can now cruise around in a mobile hotspot.

The service, called Avis Connect, brings portable Wi-Fi connectivity to rental cars. It became available this week at San Francisco International Airport, and will launch in late June at Los Angeles International.

Among the other Avis locations that will offer the service in the coming weeks are San Jose, Oakland, Newark and San Diego. Later this year, it will be available from Avis rental units in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York and Seattle.

The service, which costs $10.95 a day, "is very competitively priced," said Avis representative Susan McGowan, "especially when you consider that same box can be used in your hotel room."

The service allows multiple Wi-Fi-enabled devices to connect to the Internet, giving travelers access to data, music, games, chat and anything else they might like.

"Avis Connect service is simple to use and does not require any software or technical expertise," said Sterling Pratz, chief executive of Autonet Mobile, the designer of the service. "Anyone who has a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or device can simply log on and surf."

Where am I?

Should we take offense, order a drink, or what? That depends, of course, on where you think these words turned up.
