NEWS, TIPS & ADVICE | FREQUENT FLIER
American Airlines is offering free on-demand music, movies and TV to first- and business-class passengers on transcontinental flights.
It began offering the hand-held devices, with 7-inch touch-screen monitors, Tuesday on Boeing 767-200 and 767-300 jets flying New York-Los Angeles and New York-San Francisco routes.
Premium passengers can choose from up to 12 movies that haven't been released to DVD, such as "The Painted Veil" and "Catch and Release"; 15 hours of television news, music videos and shows; and 50 music CDs.
Separately, American will test a smaller media player, with a 4.3-inch monitor, on nearly all MD80 flights between Los Angeles and Chicago over four months. It will play music, up to five movies and more than three hours of television.
First-class fliers will get them for free. Coach fliers can rent them for a $10 credit-card charge and keep the ear buds.
If the devices prove popular, American may offer them on the rest of its MD80s, which account for 300 of its 672-plane fleet, said Mary McKee, managing director of on-board products.
