LocalHikes.com handy for hikers

If the outdoors beckons, bookmark localhikes.com, a website that'll set you off on the right foot.

What's hot: The site offers hundreds of hikes reported by volunteers in the U.S., with directions to trail heads, the difficulty rating, time, elevation gain and loss and more. You'll find topo maps, photos and comments. Users can search for hikes by ZIP code or city. There's a robust list of hikes in the West, especially California.

What's not: It's not global. It's not flashy either, but who cares when it's so functional?

Where am I?

The French built this place before the Americans took it over. There are a couple of big lakes next door.
