Gold Point is about a three-hour drive northwest from Las Vegas on U.S. 95 or a 5 1/2 -hour drive from Los Angeles by U.S. 395. Herb Robbins encourages people to contact him before visiting: sheriffstone@goldpointghosttown.com, (775) 482-4653.

Five restored miner's cabins are available on Saturdays. Only one of the cabins has a full bathroom ($134, including a full breakfast). The other cabins, which have chemical toilets and share a shower in another building, cost $94 and also include breakfast. An all-you-can-eat dinner is available on Saturdays -- by arrangement -- for $17 per person.

The centennial celebration begins on May 23, and runs through May 25. The miner's cabins are already booked, but motel rooms may be available about 70 miles to the south in Beatty, Nev., at the Stagecoach Hotel & Casino. Double rooms from $60; (800) 424-4946, www.stagecoachhotel.

Where am I?

This hotel, which dates to 1921, has 39 rooms and commanding perch by a big river.
