NEVADA | GAMBLING + CASINOS
Unlike its big sister (Las Vegas), Laughlin doesn't offer any scheduled air service from Southern California. Take Interstate 15 to Barstow and then Interstate 40 to Needles. From there, follow U.S. 95 north. The total trip is 3 1/2 to 4 hours.
WHERE TO STAY
Laughlin doesn't offer five-star luxury. But all of the properties provide pleasant rooms with the usual amenities at low prices.
Harrah's, (702) 298-4600, www.harrahslaughlin.com. Offers rooms from $27 on weekdays and $55 on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Avi,(800) 284-2946, www.avicasino.com. An Indian property south of town, it tends to have the lowest prices: $22 on weekdays and $39 on weekends.
WHERE TO DINE
The buffet is still king in Laughlin, as the lines -- even before 5 p.m. -- attest. All the hotels have them.
Windows on the River, (800) 662-5825, at the Aquarius Casino Resort, has nice views and dinner (from $12.99).
The Hickory Pit Steakhouse, (702) 298-2453, Ext. 3716, inside the Edgewater, has good steaks for less than $20.
