THE BEST WAY

From LAX, Southwest offers nonstop service to Houston's William P. Hobby Airport. Southwest and American offer connecting flights (change of planes). Restricted round-trip fares begin at $198.

Driving: From downtown Houston, drive east along Interstate 10 for about 60 miles to the town of Winnie and then take Texas 124 south. Continue on 124 for about 18 miles, then turn left on 5th Street and look for the Louis B. Smith Bird Sanctuary near the corner of Dunman and 5th streets.

Fees: $5 a person.

Hours: Dawn to dusk.

For more information, go to www.houstonaudubon.org.

To arrange a professional tour of the island, contact Tropical Birding at (800) 348-5941 or go to www.tropicalbirding.com/highislandmigrationtours.html.

WHERE TO STAY AND EAT

Lodging and restaurant choices in High Island are nearly nonexistent.

At Winnie, about 18 miles north of High Island, you can choose from a number of chain hotels and restaurants, including a new Comfort Inn & Suites on Gulfway Drive and I-10. For reservations, call (409) 296-6200 or go to www.comfortinn.com/hotel-winnie-texas-TX939?promo=gglocal.

Also in Winnie, try Al-T's Seafood and Steakhouse for family-style Cajun food, located on Gulfway Drive south of Texas 73. For more information, call (409) 296-9818 or go to www.al-ts.com.
