Where to find So. California star-gazing parties

Attending a star party: The celeb sightings include Venus and Mars in these gatherings away from Los Angeles city lights.

Most public star parties are organized by amateur astronomy clubs and are held in secluded parklands during the "new moon" lunar phase, when moonlight does not obscure the view of other heavenly objects.

For dates and locations check the following websites:

Los Angeles Astronomical Society, www.laas.org

The Andromeda Society of the Morongo Basin, www.andromedasociety.org

Orange County Astronomers, www.ocastronomers.org

Pomona Valley Amateur Astronomers, www.pvaa.us

Riverside Astronomical Society, www.rivastro.org

What to take:

Wear warm, comfortable clothes; take lawn chairs or blankets and a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate. If you have a flashlight, cover the lens with red tape so the light does not blind other partygoers.

Where am I?

Should we take offense, order a drink, or what? That depends, of course, on where you think these words turned up.
