THE BEST WAY TO SEDONA

From LAX, Alaska flies nonstop to Flagstaff, and US Airways offers connecting flights. Restricted round-trip fares begin at $138. But with gas at $2.30 a gallon, the eight-hour drive will be easiest on your wallet.

WHERE TO STAY

Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa, 2250 W. Highway 89A, Sedona; (866) 312-4111, www.sedonarouge.com. Roadside motel faces the street and a supermarket parking lot; but it's nicely designed and has sophisticated bedding, walk-in showers with overhead rain-shower sprays and 32-inch flat-screen TVs. Many rooms feature vaulted ceilings, fireplaces and balconies. Restaurant and full-service spa on the grounds. Ask for a rear room with a red rock view. Doubles from $159.

Matterhorn Inn, 230 Apple Ave., Sedona, (800) 372-8207, www.matterhorninn.com. Centrally located motel is in uptown Sedona. Rooms are small but clean, efficient, inexpensive and have great views. Some pets allowed. Doubles from $99.

Enchantment Resort, 525 Boynton Canyon Road, Sedona; (800) 826-4180, www.enchantmentresort.com. Seventy-acre resort has a Southwestern theme; rooms are plush, with decks; some have beehive fireplaces and many have panoramic red rock views. Daily activity schedule. Two restaurants, spa, clubhouse. Doubles from $295, with $22 per night resort fee.

WHERE TO EAT Coffee Pot Restaurant, 2050 W. Highway 89A, Sedona, (928) 282-6626. Start your day at this bustling diner. The specialty is omelets; there are 101 to choose from, including oddities such as crabmeat, and peanut butter and jelly. Most omelets about $8.

Cowboy Club, 241 N. Highway 89A, Sedona, (928) 282-5777, www.cowboyclub.com. Yahoo, buckaroo! Try a buffalo burger at this diner ($12.99) and cactus fries, made from cactus ($7.99). Wash them down with a prickly pear margarita ($7.50).

Javelina Cantina, 671 Highway 179 (Hillside Shops), Sedona, (928) 203-9514, www.javelinacantina.com. Fish tacos and good Tex-Mex at this lively cafe. Margaritas are a specialty. $4.50 to $15.95
