Cow Canyon Restaurant, 163 Mission Road, Bluff, UT 84512; (435) 672-2208. Open April 1 to Nov. 1, it serves what the chef calls "eclectic dishes," such as Moroccan chicken, spinach lasagna and red chile pork — all based on fresh local ingredients — plus beer and wine. Entrees, $12 to $18. The attached trading post has a fine selection of Native American art.

Twin Rocks Café, 913 E. Navajo Twins Drive, Bluff, UT 84512; (435) 672-2341, www.twinrockscafe.com/ . This inexpensive cafe, open year-round, does a little bit of everything, diner fare as well as Navajo dishes and even some vegetarian cuisine. Dinner entrees from $8 to $17.

The Turquoise Room, 303 E. 2nd St., Winslow, AZ 86047; (928) 289-2888; www.theturquoiseroom.net . It's 225 miles from Monument Valley, but the gourmet meals served up inside historic La Posada Hotel — to say nothing of the generous margaritas — will take your road weariness away. Try the "native cassoulet," made of local game, or the reservation-raised lamb. Entrees start at about $18.
