The Ambrose: * *

New and noteworthy: The Santa Monica eco-boutique hotel became the first hotel to earn a silver-level LEED certification for an existing building.

The stay: The hotel is decorated in classic Craftsman style and functions as a launching pad for tourists and business travelers.

The scene: After dozens of travelers from Europe, Arizona, Oregon and California descend on the complimentary breakfast buffet, the hotel is deserted for the rest of the day.

Deal maker: Ecological conservation practices put the hotel at the forefront of resource management, without inconveniencing guests.

Deal breaker: Limited on-site service means you're frequently on your own for most meals, trip planning and special requests.

Stats: 1255 20th St., Santa Monica; (310) 315-1555, www.ambrosehotel.com

Rates: Standard rooms begin at $239.

Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.

Where am I?

This is a city known for great old architecture. And it's a desert spot and has a long-standing tradition of hospitality.
