Hard Rock Hotel San Diego: How it rates

How it rates: * * *

New and noteworthy: The Hard Rock Hotel, laden with suites, high-tech features and sleek, modern design, is in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter.

The stay: Rock collectibles, rock lingo and rock music permeate nearly every surface and sensation, almost concealing the Hard Rock brand's graying classic-rock roots.

The scene: Hordes of young locals and tourists queue for bar admission while tourists, conventioneers and even San Diego residents check in for some personal party time.

Deal maker: Despite its 12 stories and 420 rooms, the décor, music, bars and restaurants make it feel like a smaller boutique hotel.

Deal breaker: The hotel, across the street from the San Diego Convention Center, aims to attract anyone who ever listened to album rock.

Stats: 207 5th Ave., San Diego; (866) 751-7625, www.hardrockhotelsd.com.

Rooms: Studios begin at $265; suites $425 to $5,000 a night.

Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
