How it rates: * *

New and noteworthy: The former Hotel Andalucia was renamed the Canary Hotel and remodeled into a more elaborately decorated 97-room hotel.

The stay: Hole up in your room with some famed Central Coast wines, hit happy hour at the lobby bar or splash in the rooftop pool with gorgeous views.

The scene: Independent types from across the nation come to unwind with laid-back sightseeing.

Deal maker: Lovely, fresh décor and a convenient downtown location.

Deal breaker: Uneven service makes the premium room rates undeserved.

Stats: 31 W. Carrillo St., Santa Barbara; (877) 468-3515, www.canarysantabarbara.com.

Rooms: Rates begin at $405.

Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
