How it rates : * * 1/2

New and noteworthy: Rehabbed by a billionaire, the inn has had an extreme makeover.

The stay: Within 30 minutes, you're relaxed. If you're not, there's lots of wine in the room.

The scene: Couples in their classy sweatsuits and jeans come to hide away and leave business behind.

Deal maker: The beach, the ocean, a fancy restaurant, all right there.

Deal breaker: Without the beach, it's a super simple place.

Stats: 22878 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu; (866) 265-5360, www.malibubeachinn.com

Rooms: $325 to $1,212 for rooms and suites.

Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
