ORANGE COUNTY | HOTEL REVIEW
Rating: * (one star) = Satisfactory
New and noteworthy: A remodel of the guest rooms and ocean-view bar and restaurant gives a luxurious new veneer to the 59-year-old property.
The stay: Swim in the pool, walk the beach, bodysurf or have cocktails watching the sun set over the Pacific.
The scene: Wedding parties mix with families and couples all mesmerized by the surf and sand.
Deal maker: Every room, whether in the towers or stand-alone buildings, has an ocean view, and all rooms are seconds from the beach.
Deal breaker: High room rates and meal prices don't necessarily mean finely tuned service or deluxe comforts in the resort or the Aquaterra Spa.
Stats: 1555 S. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach; (949) 497-4477, www.surfandsandresort.com.
Rooms: Rates average $470 but vary from $365 to $1,345.
Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
