PALM SPRINGS | HOTEL REVIEW
How it rates: * 1/2
New and noteworthy: A $16-million remodel transformed the 1936 hotel-motel into an upscale boutique property with private casitas, a new restaurant and exotic décor.
The stay: At this comfortably small property, nighttime is for dining and drinks, and daylight is a time for quiet sloth.
The scene: Business travelers and families come for easy-access accommodations and the big pool; locals come to dine at the restaurant.
Deal maker: Rooms are well-appointed for leisure travelers seeking a low-key vibe; they'll also find that large pool, plus cocktails and fancy food.
Deal breaker: Despite the hotel's appeal to families and business travelers, the service and décor are inadequate for both; singles and young couples with lots of time and money are the target guests.
Stats: 572 N. Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs; (800) 557-2187, www.colonypalmshotel.com.
Rooms: Standard rooms begin at $209; top suites can be $1,099 a night.
Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
