How it rates: * * * (3 stars)

New and noteworthy: A $15-million overhaul turns 70 rooms into cozy, ocean-adjacent luxury.

The stay: Overnight stays in such a prestigious neighborhood 500 steps from the beach is a wish come true.

The scene: Singletons and families share the serene, sunny spaces by the pool and dining room, but mainly head off property for business, dining and entertainment.

Deal maker: Ocean views, private dining room, big desks and fluffy beds make you wish it were home, forever.

Deal breaker: Deluxe resort prices without all of the resort amenities.

Stats: 849 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica; (800) 777-0758, (310) 393-0486, www.hoteloceanasantamonica.com.

Rooms: Brochure rates $650 to $1,200; a $15 service fee is extra.

Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
