How the Sunset Marquis Hotel & Villas rates: * * * 1/2

New and noteworthy: A $20-million expansion added 40 villas, a spa, a gourmet restaurant and lush landscaping to the all-suite hotel.

The stay: An in-the-city getaway gets surreal as guests veer from being treated like rock stars to actually spotting rock stars.

The scene: Checking in grants admission to an inner circle of nomadic celebrities and their entourage of hipster helpers.

Deal maker: Luxury additions create a unique villa village that looks and feels unlike many other hotels, anywhere.

Deal breaker: Despite extreme focus on fulfilling guest wishes, service is uneven and room features vary significantly.

Stats: 1200 N. Alta Loma Road, West Hollywood; (800) 858-9758, www.sunsetmarquishotel.com.

Rooms: Junior suites begin at $485; junior villas begin at $1,000.

Rating is based on the room, service, ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.
