THE BEST WAY

From LAX, connecting service (change of planes) to Querétaro, which serves Guanajuato, is available on Continental and Mexicana. Restricted round-trip fares begin at $538.

Driving: Guanajuato is about five hours from Mexico City. Highway 57 to Querétaro, then Highway 45 to Guanajuato.

Bus: Luxury buses leave several times a day from Guanajuato to Mexico City. Fares are about $40.

WHERE TO STAY

WHERE TO EAT

El Abue, 14 Calle San Jose, 473-732-6242, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Simple, good quality Mexican food. Entrees up to $13.

La Pirinola Terraza, 36 Plazuela de San Fernanda, 473-733-9752, an outdoor cafe that's good for dinner and people watching. Entrees up to $9.
