Planning your Europe trip: Train or airplane?

Is it cheaper to fly or ride trains in Europe? Which is faster? The answers may be surprising once you figure in taxes, wait times and shuttling between airports and downtowns. We compared two trips, London to Brussels and London to Basel, Switzerland, using low-cost airlines one way and high- speed trains the other way. We tallied up times and costs, then assigned a "hassle factor" (1 is best, 5 is worst).

Where am I?

To reach this view of a mountain lake, it's about a 4-mile hike from one of the classic, woodsy old national park hotels of the American West.
