THE BEST WAY TO SAN DIEGO

We went the green option: Amtrak; rates vary depending on category (AAA, senior, etc.) and the station you start from, but figure $75 or less for two round-trip tickets from L.A.'s Union Station.

WHERE TO STAY

San Diego has a range of hotels. Other than the Holiday Inn downtown and the Hotel Solamar mentioned in the story, the chains are well-represented.

For a non-chain, you might try the Keating, 432 F St., near the downtown Westfield Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter. (619) 814-5700, www.thekeating.com. Rates start at about $210 a night.

WHERE TO EAT

Zagarella Italian Restaurant, 1655 India St.; (619) 236-8764, www.zagarellaitalianrestaurant.com. Entrees from about $14.

Princess Pub & Grille, 1665 India St.; (619) 702-3021, www.princesspub.com. Entrees from $15.95.

Where am I?

Should we take offense, order a drink, or what? That depends, of course, on where you think these words turned up.
