THE BEST WAY

From Los Angeles, take Interstate 5 north to California 14 north for about 120 miles. When California 14 becomes U.S. 395, follow it north about 210 miles. After driving through downtown Bridgeport, turn left on Twin Lakes Road and continue four miles until you see a sign for Hunewill Guest Ranch.

COST

Rates vary by time of year, but the weekly rate until Aug. 23 is $1,680 per adult based on a double-occupancy cabin. That includes three meals a day, access to a horse and several evening activities. Children's rates are lower, depending on age.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You will spend most of your days on a horse, improving your riding skills. The food is not haute cuisine, but it's good. No alcoholic beverages are provided. No TV or cellphone services are available on the ranch.

WHAT TO TAKE

A hat that you can tie down, riding boots, several pairs of jeans, sunblock, bathing suit, casual clothes, flashlight, water bottle and a warm jacket.
