At a canter on horseback in untamed California

Ride the wind among herds of mustangs this spring and summer in the craggy foothills near Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California.

Two- and three-day trail rides will be offered at the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, California, April 28 to July 29 and Sept. 1 to Oct. 14. Cost of the two-day trip is $325; the three-day trip is $425.

Sanctuary rides follow the meandering trails created by wild horses and burros through woods and meadows at this 5,000-acre slice of range land 170 miles north of Sacramento. Participants spend the night in rustic cabins at a lakeside base camp, where evening activities include a barbecue and storytelling around a campfire.

THE WILD HORSE SANCTUARY: Established nearly 30 years ago, it is a nonprofit organization; more than 300 horses and burros roam the sanctuary.

THE PHANTOM: This year, riders may get a glimpse of the mythical Phantom Stallion, his mare and new foal, which recently arrived at the reserve. The stallion wandered the hilly country near Dayton, Nev., for several years before encroaching land development led to his capture. The horse resembles the Phantom Stallion in Terri Farley's series of children's books.

Where am I?

The French built this place before the Americans took it over. There are a couple of big lakes next door.
