FRESNO

Greek Fest 2008

When, where: Aug. 22 to 25, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, at Orchard and Yale streets.

Highlights: Homemade Greek fare such as moussaka, spanakopita, shish kebab, Athenian roast chicken, baklava; live Greek music and dancing; art tours of the church, where Russian iconographer Valery Butyrsky is completing intricate works of art on the ceiling, Sistine Chapel-style.

Cost: Evening admission is $5; kids 6 to 10, $1; 5 and younger, free.

SAN DIEGO

San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival's Grand Tasting

When, where: Nov. 15, Embarcadero Park North, behind Seaport Village, West Harbor Drive at Pacific Coast Highway.

Highlights: Tickets are now on sale for the event, which sold out last year; about 700 wines and spirits; gourmet foods; olive oil tasting tent; celebrity chef book signings and more.

Cost: $100 to $150.

Gold Rush Days

When, where: Aug. 29 to Sept. 1

Highlights: Lectures on the Gold Rush experience for various ethnicities, costumed reenactors, gunfights, storytelling, period artifacts and food preparation, musicians on period instruments.

SQUAW VALLEY, CALIF.

Everything Lavender Tour & Workshop

When, where: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and Aug. 3, 9, 10 at Squaw Valley Herb Gardens, 31765 E. Kings Canyon Road.

Highlights: Tips on growing, harvesting and using lavender for cleaning, in medicinal remedies and in cooking. Plus a guided walk, demonstrations and craft making.

Cost: $20 per person; tickets must be paid for at least three days before the workshop.
