HAWAII

Romance Festival

The Matt Catingub Orchestra of Hawaii presents its ode to amour in Honolulu. Highlights include outdoor concerts at the Waikiki Shell (International Music Night and Smokey Robinson); "The Most Romantic Songs Ever Written . . . Part 2"; Gladys Knight, Aaron Neville and Kimberley Locke in "The Rhythm of Romance"; and Boz Scaggs and the Catingub Orchestra at "Pink Night."

When, where: May 2 to 11, various locations.

MAINE

Down East Spring Birding Festival

Atlantic puffins should be at this party, as well as bald eagles, spruce grouse and more than two dozen warblers. The Cobscook Bay region is home to hundreds of bird species. Guided hikes are held at several locations, and boat trips include excursions to Machias Seal Island to spot puffins.

When, where: May 23 to 26 at various locations.

Cost: Festival fee is $50 per person, $150 family group rate. Fee covers hikes and presentations. Boat trips are extra, $20 to $80. Registrants also receive a booklet on self-guided birding explorations.
