Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Lake, Glacier National Park; (866) 875-8456, www.nationalparkreservations.com/glacier. Great but isolated lakeside location. Swiss-influenced architecture and high-ceilinged, woodsy lobby date to 1914, a bit tired despite renovations. The hotel offers 214 rooms, plus a restaurant. Rooms from $135.
Lake McDonald Lodge, Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park (phone and website same as above). Built in 1914 with a hunting-lodge feel and 100 rooms, restaurant. Rooms from $114.
WHERE TO EAT
Both of these eateries are on the Blackfeet Reservation just east of the park near the town of St. Mary's.
Babb Cattle Baron Supper Club, on U.S. 89, eight miles north of St. Mary's; (406) 732-4033, Steakhouse just outside east end of park. Entrees, $12.95 to $34.95.
Two Sisters Cafe on U.S. 89, four miles north of St. Mary's; (406) 732-5535, www.twosistersofmontana.com. Hearty food (grilled whitefish is a specialty) and a big license-plate collection. Management plans to close the cafe Sept. 29 through late May. Entrees, $12.95 to $21.95.
